It looks like Israel Adesanya, and not the winner of today’s bout between Glover Teixeira and Thiago Santos will be next for Jan Blachowicz. While Santos is coping with the development, ‘Marreta’ admits he wasn’t happy when he first heard of the UFC’s plans.

Santos will battle Teixeira in the main event of UFC Vegas 13 today. Until recently, the expectation was that the winner of the bout would advance to face the new light heavyweight champ, Blachowicz.

But, after Jared Cannonier lost to Robert Whittaker at UFC 254, the UFC changed gears. More recently UFC President Dana White has confirmed that the UFC is working on having the middleweight champ, Adesanya, challenge Blachowicz next.

While discussing this development, ahead of UFC Vegas 13, Santos said this (quotes via MMA Fighting).

“I already knew nothing was definitive,” Santos said. “We never know what will happen until the contract is signed, so [UFC President Dana [White] can say… he said the winner [of Santos-Teixeira] would fight for the belt, and now said it’s going to be Adesanya. I was upset at first when I saw the news, but then I calmed down and thought, ‘Why?’ Anything can happen.

“He might change in the end. We’re in a pandemic, injuries, anything can happen. I’ll continue doing my work, I’ll do my best to win against Glover and do what I have to do. If Adesanya gets the fight, I’ll talk to my manager and coaches to see the best options, if I’m doing one more fight. I don’t know. I don’t have much to say about this when there is no contract signed and things aren’t certain.”

The 36-year-old Santos (21-7) hasn’t fought since July 2019, when he lost via split decision to now former champ, Jon Jones. Santos incurred serious injuries to both of his knees during the fight.
