Tom Aspinall Says “Big News is Coming”, Following Meeting With UFC Exec
By FCF Staff
There’s still no official word as to if and when Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall will fight. But, the latter’s reporting that “big news” is coming, in terms of his next bout.
For months now, there’s been extensive discussion regarding a fight between Jones and Aspinall. Initially, Jones repeatedly shot down the idea that he should face Aspinall. But, following the heavyweight champ’s win over Stipe Miocic in November, Jones said he would agree to fight Aspinall if the UFC tabled a large, financial offer.
More recently, Aspinall was a guest on “The Ariel Helwani Show“. While discussing his recent meeting with UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell, the interim champ alluded to an announcement coming soon, regarding his next fight (quote via MMA Fighting.com).
“We had a nice meal and we talked everything through. Hunter has always been extremely personable and reasonable with me—I can’t say what he’s like with other people, I don’t know—but with me and my team he’s been nothing but hospitable and fantastic. We had a fantastic meeting, everything went amazing, I understand my position now, I understand what the company’s doing now, and you’ve got to stay tuned because there’s some big news coming.”
Aspinall (15-3) hasn’t competed since last July when he quickly stopped Curtis Blaydes. Aspinall has gone 8-1 in the UFC to date.
The victory over Miocic was just the second time Jones (28-1) has fought since 2020. The former light-heavyweight champ won the vacant heavyweight title in March, 2023, by quickly submitting Ciryl Gane.
