At UFC 183 on Saturday, Jordan Mein will take on one of the promotion’s most experienced welterweights in Thiago Alves, and the rising fighter is keenly aware of what an impressive victory could mean.

Since Alves has spent much of the last few years sidelined with injuries, the punishing striker isn’t currently ranked in the top 15 rankings. But, as Mein recently relayed to UFC.com, due to his opponent’s impressive resume, a win over the “Pitbull” could do a lot for the 25 year-old welterweight.

“I don’t know if it will really move my ranking if I beat him,” Mein said. “He’s off the ranking (list) and he’d been out (for a while). So I’m not too sure as far as my ranking goes, but as far as the UFC sees me, maybe it’ll change a little bit.

“It has to be impressive for it to (earn me) a co-main event spot. If not, maybe I’m back to where I was. But that’s what I want, that co-main event spot and then getting to the main event. I think an impressive win would do that for me.”

Before his injury woes, Alves was one of the UFC’s top 170’ers, and challenged now former champ Georges St-Pierre in 2009. Alves lost the bout via unanimous decision. More recently the 31 year-old, American Top Team fighter earned a decision win over Seth Baczynski in April, 2014.

Mein, on the other hand, is coming off a quick, TKO win over Mike Pyle last August.

UFC 183 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
