UFC 246: Holly Holm is Still Fighting For “Gold”, Not a “Participation Ribbon”

Although Holly Holm is closing in on 40, the legendary fighter remains confident in her abilities to win another UFC belt.

The former bantamweight champ and decorated boxer is booked to fight Raquel Pennington at UFC 246, which will take place this Saturday in Las Vegas. The fight will mark the first time Holm has competed since last July, when she was knocked out by bantamweight and featherweight champ, Amanda Nunes.

While speaking recently about what she’s hoping to achieve at this stage of her career, the 38-year-old Holm said this (quote via MMA Junkie):

“If I wasn’t still trying to climb and fight for that belt then what would I be doing this sport for anyway?” Holm said. “I always say I’m not here for a participation ribbon. I’m here for the gold, and I’m going to work to get there, and every fight I take just as seriously as the next.

“Yes, it was heartbreaking to not be able to get that belt back in the summer, but I’m still cranking forward. I’m still moving forward, and I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t have big dreams for myself. I would just walk away from it, so yeah, every fight I have is, to me, is eye on the prize always.”

Prior to facing Nunes, Holm (12-5) worked her way to a decision win over featherweight contender Megan Anderson in June, 2018.
