UFC 294: Khamzat Chimaev Says Possibly Broken Hand Impacted Performance
By FCF Staff
Khamzat Chimaev managed to outscore Kamaru Usman at UFC 294 on Saturday. But, the middleweight contender is reporting he had to push through a hand injury while doing so.
Chimaev took Usman down not long into the fight and dominated the opening frame; however, rounds two and three were much more competitive. Ultimately, Chimaev won the fight via a majority decision.
While talking to the media afterward, the undefeated fighter reported that he incurred a hand injury in round one (quotes via MMA Junkie.com).
“I dominated the guy first round,” Chimaev said. “In the first round, last minute, I think I broke my hand. It was hard to wrestle and keep him down, but I couldn’t use my right hand, so we’ll see what’s happening. Maybe it’s broken, maybe not, but you feel f*cking pain. I don’t know. I don’t care. I won. My hand was up.”
With the victory, Chimaev moved his overall record to 13-0. The loss was Usman’s third in a row, as it follows consecutive defeats to welterweight champ, Leon Edwards.
Usman (20-4) took the fight on short notice, after Paulo Costa was forced to withdraw due to issues with his elbow and a serious staph infection.
UFC 294 took place in Abu Dhabi.
