Belal Muhammad’s reign as the UFC’s welterweight champion ended up being a short one, as Jack Della Maddalena proved to be too much for the rugged fighter.

The two squared off in the main event for UFC 315, in what was Muhammad’s first bout, since he won the welterweight title last summer by defeating Leon Edwards. The wrestling and top game that was a decisive factor for Muhammad in that contest, was not one against Della Maddena, who defended six of nine takedown attempts.

After five rounds of memorable action, which saw Della Maddalena outstrike Muhammad in every round, all three judges awarded it to the challenger.

Afterward, Della Maddalena said he would welcome a fight with lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, who is expected to move up to challenge for the belt.

In the co-main, flyweight champ and legend Valentina Shevchenko used her counterstriking effectively to defeat challenger Manon Fiorot by unanimous decision.
