UFC Heavyweight Brendan Schaub Enters Metamoris Pro Jiu Jitsu Invitational Event

Brendan Schaub

By Timothy J. Gilbert

Although he has no fights lined up for the immediate future, 30 year old UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub, is not sitting idle.

Schaub (9-3) will face Roberto Abreu on June 9 at the Metamoris Pro Jiu Jitsu Invitational 2 competition.

Schaub, a BJJ brown belt, is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Lavar Johnson at UFC 157. The Los Angeles resident looks to further showcase the ground skills developed under the tutelage of Ryron Gracie.

He will face Abreu, an Abu Dhabi silver medalist and multiple World No-Gi Championship winner.

They will compete in one of six 20 minute, one-round, scoreless matches.

Metamoris founder Ralek Gracie commented on the unique scoreless nature of his competition via press release,

“Jiu-jitsu tournaments have devolved, especially at the elite level, to a game based on who can score points with a sweep or dominant position in the last few seconds of a match to win. I founded Metamoris to create a tournament where submissions are the only goal, not points. With the introduction of judges, we will avoid draws. Someone in a fight is always sharper. And now, the fighter who controls the bout with technique, the fighter who shows more varied and frequent submission acquisition, will get his hand raised.”

The event is headlined by a bout between One FC lightweight champion Shinya Aoki and Kron Gracie, grandson of Helio Gracie. It will take place at Pauley Pavilion, on the campus on UCLA in Los Angeles.
