Although Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor are both ranked in the top five of the UFC’s lightweight division, the latter’s coach is saying their rematch will take place at 170 pounds.

Last week, McGregor reported that he’s willing to fight Poirier again on January 23rd, which is the date the UFC’s offered. More recently, McGregor’s longtime coach, John Kavanagh claimed the rematch will take place at welterweight.

Watching @TheNotoriousMMA do MMA rounds lately has been a real joy and education. Fluidity of movement with elite level timing and skill. Dustin has improved so much since first meeting, conor has improved much more imo. To see them hydrated & healthy at 170 will be fascinating

Poirier responded to the tweet with an emoji of two swords crossing. In addition, lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, tweeted this.

To be #1 contender in 155 you have to make weight and not fight at 170
It’s not fair for other guys like Tony , Hooker , Makhachev , Beneil , they always make weight
If Dustin VS Conor will be at 170 I can guarantee you it won’t be #1 contender match. Somebody will get a shot

McGregor and Poirier fought in 2014, at featherweight, and the latter was stopped in the first round.

The UFC has not officially announced McGregor – Poirier 2.
