Dan Henderson Supports Chael Sonnen, But Says Fight With Jon Jones “Degrades the Sport”

Dan Henderson let it be known recently on Twitter that he’s not happy about the fact that his longtime training partner Chael Sonnen has been granted a title shot against Jon Jones in April, and now the fighter has elaborated as to why.

After Henderson sarcastically tweeted on Wednesday that perhaps he should go to “sh-t talking school” in order to secure a fight with Jones, the 42 year-old legend posted today:

And just to make it clear, I will always hv love for Chael and don’t blame him for saying yes to a big opportunity. But giving him that fight rt now degrades the sport of Mma.

Sonnen has been tapped to coach opposite Jones in the next season of “The Ultimate Fighter” and will fight the light-heavyweight champ next spring, despite the fact he hasn’t competed at 205 pounds in several years.

UFC President Dana White relayed in a teleconference yesterday that Sonnen was awarded the bout due to ongoing concerns over Henderson’s injured knee, and that the rest of the division’s top light-heavyweights are currently booked for other fights.

White also cited Sonnen’s willingness to step up and fight Jones on just eight days notice, after Henderson was forced to withdraw from UFC 151 due to his injury, as another reason why the polarizing fighter was awarded a title shot.

Sonnen was helping Henderson prepare for his scheduled bout with Jones, prior to his injury and the event’s cancellation.

Due to the fact Henderson’s knee did not require surgery, the fighter was not expected to be out for a significant period of time initially.

The former Strikeforce and PRIDE champion hasn’t competed since last November when he worked his way to a unanimous decision win over “Shogun” Rua.
