Caros Fodor Says Teammate Demetrious Johnson “Would Never Take Anybody Lightly”, Despite Being Massive Favorite at UFC 178

Very few people seem to believe that Demetrious Johnson’s reign as flyweight champion will end at UFC 178, and Caros Fodor is clearly not one of them. Johnson will defend his title versus Chris Cariaso on September 27th, and like most observers, Fodor says his teammate will win.

Case in point, some of the oddsmakers have Johnson as a -1200 favorite. Cariaso is a +900 underdog on some of the betting lines. Many would argue that the odds are in keeping with the general surprise the bout generated, once it was announced.

So, is there any danger that “Mighty Mouse” could look past Cariaso? Who is dangerous vet that’s coming off a stoppage win over Ilarde Santos, and decision victories over Danny Martinez and Louis Smolka?

“To be honest man, DJ coaches me,” Fodor said on a recent episode of Full Contact Fighter Radio, while discussing whether he’s had to ensure Johnson remains focused on facing Cariaso. “I really don’t give him much advice; I try to ride his coat tails and follow his programs to a tee.”

“He’s got the perfect mindset for this sport and he would never take anybody lightly, ever,” added Fodor, who is scheduled to fight Vincent Latoel at ONE FC 20 on September 12th. “He reads into every single one of his opponents; he gives them all the respect in the world, and sees all their threats. He would never be a guy who would think he’d walk straight through someone I don’t think. I don’t think he’d ever make that mistake.”

Part of the reason Johnson is so heavily favored to win, is because the bout has arrived at a time when the champ is firing on all cylinders. Johnson is coming off a clear cut, decision win over Ali Bagautinov in June, after knocking out perennial contender Joseph Benavidez last December. Prior to that, the AMC Pankration fighter tapped out John Moraga with a fifth round, armbar in July, 2013.

As a result, the dynamic and explosive flyweight has catapulted up the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings, and currently sits at #4. Only fellow champs Cain Velasquez, Jose Aldo and Jon Jones are ahead of Johnson on that prized list. Johnson is not only regarded as the world’s best flyweight, he’s widely viewed as one of the planet’s best fighters period.

“No, I think he’s going to destroy him,” said Fodor, while discussing Johnson’s bout with Cariaso. “He’s beaten the top guys in his weight class in the world already, and I think they’re having a hard time finding guys for him right now. But, a fight’s a fight and anything can happen, but DJ for sure.”

UFC 178 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will also feature a featherweight bout between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.
