Ray Borg has turned heads in both of his UFC appearances to date, and his head coach believes 2015 could be a breakout year for the 21 year-old flyweight.

The FIT NHB fighter made his Octagon debut last April, and although he lost via split decision to Dustin Ortiz, Borg impressed many observers by pushing the contender to his limits. Then in June, Borg went on to record his first UFC victory, by choking out Shane Howell in the opening round.

So, while Borg (7-1) has drawn praise for what he’s showcased in fights, his head coach Tom Vaughn, says he has skills that reach outside the cage.

“Oh yeah. We really believe in this kid,” Vaughn recently relayed on Full Contact Fighter Radio. “He’s talented; he’s also got personality. You know what’s interesting about Ray, is Ray is kind of a quiet kid, but you put a microphone in front of him he knows what to do.”

“I’m proud of all of our people,” Vaughn furthered about Borg, who submitted Nick Urso at a Legacy FC event last April, before fighting Ortiz two weeks later. “But the ones people are getting to see now, they’re seeing some guys that have some talent and some character. I think Ray in a couple of years could be the guy. It’s a tough division, but we’re taking fights one at a time, and we’re definitely not overlooking this guy in February. But Ray’s got something special.”

Up next, Borg will take on Chris Kelades (8-1) at UFC Fight Night 60 on February 14th. The Canadian fighter is coming off a headline grabbing UFC debut, as in October, he became the first and only man to defeat Patrick Holohan.

The Fitplus fighter stepped in on just a fews days notice to face Holohan at UFC FN 54, and worked his way to a unanimous decision win.

“He looks tough to me,” Vaughn noted about the 33 year-old Kelades. “He looks durable. So that would be, I don’t want to say it’s my biggest concern, but it’s the thing that I think gives him the best chance against Ray, because I think Ray is better at everything.”

UFC FN 60 will be hosted by Broomfield, Colorado’s 1st Bank Center. The February 14th card will be headlined by a welterweight fight between Stephen Thompson and Brandon Thatch.
