Speculation regarding what bout will serve as the headliner for UFC 300 continues, and recently, Jon Jones reported he was asked to compete at the historic event.

Several, key fights have been booked for UFC 300 already, including Justin Gaethje versus Max Holloway for the ceremonial, BMF title. But, the card’s official main event has yet to be announced.

More recently, Jones spoke with Submission Radio and the heavyweight champ said he received a call to fight at the upcoming event (quotes via MMA Fighting.com).

“I got a call from [UFC Chief Business Officer] Hunter Campbell, one of the head lawyers of the UFC, he said, ‘Jon, I know it’s only nine weeks away, but if there’s any chance you’re feeling up to it, it would be awesome news for the community that you’re coming back and headlining one of the biggest events ever,’” Jones said. “And, as honored as I am for the opportunity, I just don’t think I’ll be ready. I just don’t.

“So, I’m getting up there in age and I only have a few more events left, and I want to give those events my all and make sure that I come back 100 percent.”

Jones was scheduled to fight former champ, Stipe Miocic in November. But, Jones was forced to undergo surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle.

Since then, UFC President Dana White has said the promotion’s first choice is to have Jones and Miocic fight. Even though, Tom Aspinall won the interim title in November by knocking out Sergei Pavlovich in the opening round.

The former light-heavyweight champ also repeated his preference is to fight Miocic next.

“As impressive as Tom is, he’s not important enough yet to determine my schedules and my decisions,” Jones said. “That’s fair enough, huh?”

“If I were him, I would get after it, I would get after it,” Jones added, while discussing Aspinall. “If you truly believe that you’re the best in the world, then get after it. Go out there and compete. And the real fans will count your victories as champions. But don’t let me slow you down. Go out there and kick butt and make your money.”

The 36-year-old Jones (27-1) secured the vacated heavyweight title in March, 2023, by quickly submitting Ciryl Gane.

UFC 300 will be hosted by T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
