Georges St-Pierre Reports Eye Injury Reason For Delay in Return, Claims UFC Was Aware of Injury

Georges St-Pierre

When Georges St-Pierre announced he would not be able to fight until November, many concluded it was because the Canadian star wanted more time to train for his long awaited return. But, recently the former welterweight champ revealed an eye injury is the reason for the delay, and that the UFC was aware of the situation.

Earlier in the year, the UFC announced that GSP would face middleweight champ, Michael Bisping. UFC President Dana White said he hoped to book the bout for July, but when St-Pierre reported he wouldn’t be ready to fight until after October, White announced the promotion was moving on.

According to a recent report from MMA Fighting, while attending the C2 Montréal conference, St-Pierre revealed that he’s dealing with an eye injury. GSP says that he’s been advised by his doctor to not spar until September, as a result. In addition, GSP also reportedly claimed that the UFC knew of the injury, but that “people” pushed him to fight this summer anyways.

Bisping is currently sidelined with a knee injury, and as a result, Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker are fighting for an interim title, July 8th.
