Following the announcement that Kelvin Gastelum is going to challenge middleweight champ, Robert Whittaker next, the latter’s confirmed he will be sidelined for the remainder of 2018.

Gastelum and Whittaker are going to coach opposite one another on TUF 28, which will begin airing August 29th. The two will fight after the season concludes. Whittaker recently told ESPN, however, that a broken hand he sustained in his decision win over Yoel Romero at UFC 225 last month, will keep him out until 2019.

“I haven’t even started the rehab process yet,” Whittaker said. “Just more letting it heal first before I can implement that. They put a plate and some screws in (on the right hand). Realistically I’m looking at February next year.”

Gastelum, meanwhile, has been awarded a title shot after earning a decision win over “Jacare” Souza in May.
