UFC Releases Statement, Claim Georges St-Pierre Remains Under Contract

Georges St. Pierre

By FCF Staff

Georges St-Pierre has announced that he and his lawyer have terminated the fighter’s contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but the promotion, not surprisingly, doesn’t see it that way.

The former welterweight champ appeared on “The MMA Hour” on Monday and St-Pierre proceeded to claim that he’s now a free agent. According to the Canadian star, his lawyer has terminated his contract with the UFC, since the company did not tender him a specific fight offer before a deadline they had set.

St-Pierre has been in talks with the promotion for months about making a comeback, but since his contract was signed prior to the Reebok uniform deal, GSP has been negotiating for new terms. According to a follow-up report from MMA Junkie.com, the UFC has released the following statement in response to St-Pierre’s claims.

“Georges St-Pierre remains under an existing agreement with Zuffa, LLC as his MMA promoter. Zuffa intends to honor its agreement with St-Pierre and reserves its rights under the law to have St-Pierre do the same.”

The 35 year-old fighter announced in 2013 that he was taking a hiatus from fighting and vacated the 170 title. St-Pierre (25-2) has won 12 straight fights.
