Jon Jones Hasn’t Completely Shut Door on Facing Daniel Cormier at HW
By FCF Staff
Jon Jones has questioned in the past why he should move up to heavyweight to fight Daniel Cormier for a third time, but recently the light-heavyweight champ didn’t completely close the door on that possibility.
Since Jones reclaimed the UFC’s 205 title in December, by stopping Alexander Gustafsson, there’s been widespread talk about the possibility of him moving up to face Cormier for the heavyweight title. Jones has distanced himself from that happening previously, but recently the star did say this while speaking to MMA Fighting (quotes via Bloody Elbow):
“Bring out the checkbook, Dana,” Jones said. “Let’s make it happen. I’ll definitely do it for the right number. I’ll definitely do it.”
“At 205, it’s like a no-brainer that I’ll do it. I’m there to fight the next best guy. But to fight at heavyweight, I think it would take some serious convincing.”
Jones defeated Cormier by decision in 2015, and then stopped the now former 205 champ in their 2017 rematch. That result, however, was eventually overturned to a no-contest after Jones failed his post-fight drug test.
