Daniel Cormier: Ryan Bader “Has by Far Earned a Title Shot”, But Jon Jones Rematch is “Big Business”
By FCF Staff
Ryan Bader did nothing but impress at UFC 192, in his victory over Rashad Evans, but champion Daniel Cormier understands that “Darth’s” quest for a title shot likely continues.
Bader showcased new heights in his striking pedigree at last weekend’s event, and out scored Evans to earn the unanimous decision win. It was the wrestler’s fifth straight victory and moved him into the #3 spot in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division.
But, with the recent news that former champ Jon Jones has avoided jail time, following his arrest earlier this year, the consensus is that a rematch with Cormier will be booked next. The latter lost to Jones this past January.
Cormier appeared on the latest edition of “UFC Tonight“, and while discussing Bader and the title shot picture, he said this (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“Ryan Bader did really stick it to us by beating Rashad. He changed the game. He has by far earned the title shot. But Jones is going to get it if he comes back. Jon and I did big business in January and we’ll do bigger business next time. This is the biggest fight the UFC can do. The UFC is a business. Ryan, I apologize to you. I think you might have to fight again. He understands and see’s what’s going on in this business.”
The UFC has yet to formally reinstate Jones, following the plea deal he reached with New Mexico authorities earlier this month.
Cormier, meanwhile, worked his way to a split decision win over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192.
